Friday Skins And The Weekend
Fairway Phil On Fire

It was a tough day at skins on Friday but not if your name was Fairway Phil.  We played as a 6 for no other reason than we could and we're a social bunch.  This image above shows the 5 approach  shots to the 3rd green with an anxious Phil wanting to get on with his putt.  But he would have to wait as his ball was the closest of the 5 balls on the green.

Let history record that 3 birdies were scored on this hole on Friday.  Let history also record that only one man had a shot and with that shot our man in the frame went on to claim the skin.  It wasn't Phil's only birdie as he also scored a 2 on hole 7 thereby ensuring he went home with a pocketful of cash.  Not a bad day at the office scoring 2 birdies in 9 holes playing off a 26 handicap.

Then on Saturday it was Haggitt Cup qualifying time where the Wagglers had mixed results.  At the top of the pile Mahmoud was top qualifier earning himself the number 1 seed position.  Bolty qualified 8th, Brent one behind in 9th and Jarod two back in 11th.  Derek is lurking in 15th place in the middle of the pack with Eddie back in 19th.  Murray Edgar is 21st, Bruce Grant 26th with our final qualifier Warren A in 29th.  Commiserations to those who didn't quite make the cut.

Play well all those involved in the knock-out rounds and let's see if we can get a Waggler name on the trophy this year.

And so to Wednesday.

Bring Your A Game
It's A Dunner Stunner

Stories this week from Eddie ......

We had a very sunny, cloudless day in Dunedin for our Wednesday golf, which meant that with no wind it would be ideal for playing the treasured game.  So you would expect that with these conditions there would have been some outstanding scoring for the day. Not quite as expected as per the later results.

With an initial field of 24 players, this had to be amended when Jarod was keen to join, so up to 25 players. Then Tony Brown who was in the draw had some problems with his flight plan back from South Africa, so needed a delayed tee time or time out. Being a loyal Waggler he got his wife to come out to the airport to pick him up and deliver him to his tee time, so arrived to make up a fivesome  on the 17th  tee.  Just hope he had done his washing before leaving SA.  In the end it all worked out and we had a competitive field for the day with 24 paying patrons, total $120 per trimester.

The premium team today was Whiley, Keenan, Bolty and Laney who cleaned up the first two semesters, with 32 points and 41 points respectively, all contributing on a relatively equal basis. I am being kind to Geoffrey here, as he was dragging the chain in the group with just 30 points, not like him. However he has been distracted lately with Tadej Pogacar in the Tour de France.  Unfortunately for them their momentum slowed, where the final 6 holes was won by team Senaka, Fairway Phil and 2 Warrens; Egen and Alcock who scored an impressive 47 points to take the final end.  Well done boys, you were not the favoured group, however with two lefties and an ATM in the four, you were the winning under dogs.

The Blue Jacket was won by Eddie Walter with 36 points, which was a bit of a steal given the benign conditions. He played a steady game and made the grade with a couple of final pars.  Kallum and I were fortunate to win the haggle, where the ex-policeman turned up with shorts and slinky top and relished the sunny conditions. We ground down our opponents Newton and Hobbs, who submitted on the 6th hole; yes a 4/3 win.

We enjoyed playing with our guest Andrew Hobbs who had a +3 handicap and showed us how tough it is to play to this handicap. Starting from the 10th tee he drove both the 16th  hole and the 3rd hole and had to work hard to get regulation stableford points on both holes, with 3 and 1 respectively.  However he won the Swingers Trophy with 3 birdies and could have easily won the Blue Jacket with a few more putts going down.

Now it has to be noted that Bruce Grant was part of the four who were playing ahead of our group from the 10th tee; hard to miss the red towel sticking out of his back passage.  We were respectful all the way through the first 9 holes, as it contained esteemed figures Edgar, Henderson and Nikou, so do not mess with them.  On the Crossways hole there seemed to be a bit of excitement when Bruce Grant played his rescue club to within 6 inches from the pin.  As would be expected Bruce went up to tap in his birdie as he the wanted to go back to the pro-shop to organize a cart or a new step-metre.   After completing the putt he got taken to task from one of his team-mates for stepping on his line, what a bugger that there is no respect for a 4 pointer.

The Swingers trophy to Andrew Hobbs, with 3 birdies.

The Raffle won by Mahmoud Nikou with number 33.

Together with a wee dram we celebrated the birth of Warren and Lynne’s grand daughter Indie Quinn. Congratulations to the family and thanks from all of us for the celebration.

Another great day in paradise.
